Hello all, research* shows that Carers have higher rates of depression than the rest of the community, combine this with a higher average of physical health issues, carers need time to look after their own health.
I am seeking Carers of people with mental health issues that may be interested in participating in a group exercise program to be held at the Croydon Leisure Centre. After the exercise program there will be opportunities for people to stay on and have a coffee, biscuit and chat with other carers. The group exercise program is a joint initiative from the Respite for Carers program at EACH (Eastern Access Community Health) and Maroondah City Council.
Group exercise** has shown to improve a person's physical function, noticeable improvements in their strength, balance, and co-ordination; and they also improved in their memory span and in measures of mood, particularly anxiety.
Some of the problems associated with adherence to exercise is lack of motivation and costs. Exercising in groups is more rewarding and motivating than going it alone and there are minimal costs involved for this particular program .
So if you know someone who is caring for someone with a mental health issue who could benefit from exercise, social connection and a coffee and a chat, please let me know as this program will not commence if the interest is not shown to be there.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
